Rise to the Occasion

Are you prepared to make changes within yourself? What is that you want to change? Can you dig deep within yourself or are you digging yourself deep in a hole instead? Do you have the ability to move forward from your current place or position, when you are seeking to make a change, so that you will be happier?

These are some of the questions you will need to ask yourself, should you wish to rise to the occasion. During the Battle of Thermopylae in 480BC, it was believed 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians guarded the mountain pass, fought onslaught of the Persian army, that was believed to be at least 100 times more. Although stories related to history can be distorted most of the time, it does invoke the thought that in many wars around the world, people have risen to the occasion to fight and defend their country from invading armies.

The Great Wall of China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, measured in distance of 21,196 km, was believed to be built by around 300,000 soldiers without machineries but with bare hands. This wall was built to keep the northern invaders and it took around 9 years to build. It is indeed a magnificent feat. Although the Great Wall of China is very popular and well known, there are similar wall built to keep invaders away like Great Wall of Gorgan located in northern Iran and Hadrian’s Wall near Scottish border in northern England.

Rising to the occasion is very much looked in people who wish to show leadership ability. When you have a team-based motivation events, these leaders can normally be identified as they least hesitant to show their leadership skills. When you call to raise of hands, asking for volunteers to lead their team, whilst most being hesitant, there will normally at least one person willing to do so. This person is sometimes pushed into the lead by the group members. They either know this person well, or they will be in consensus to agree that the natural ability of this person, is with good leadership skills. It is the trust they have, onto the person, that prevails here.

If you want to be amongst the list of people who prevails leadership skills and aura, you will need to nurture yourself with the following prerequisites:

  1. Approachable
  2. Kind
  3. Determination
  4. Self-Discipline
  5. Sincere Character
  6. Confident
  7. Passionate
  8. Patient
  9. Shared-Vision
  10. Interpersonal communication
  11. Integrity
  12. Positive-Attitude

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.

Winston Churchill

For many, it is challenging to rise to the occasion until and unless they are put in a situation, that they cannot back down. Being passive by nature, they are comfortable without the need for them to show any leadership skills. It is fine indeed. If you are pleased with yourself, you are who you are from within. However, do not hamper others to lead, when you wish to remain as a follower.

For example, if you are not able to swim, fell of a boat and drowning, the person who jumped to rescue will probably need to find a way to grab you safely. During a rescue mission as such, there are occasions when both persons get drowned. This is because as you are panicking, you will try to grab anything near you to stay afloat. Unfortunately, the person who is trying to rescue you ends up in the same trap as well.

If you are the person who is going to dive in and rescue someone, make sure you are not putting yourself at risk as well. Be aware of your surroundings, strategize, and approach with confidence. Better still, in the case of the example given, if there is a life jacket or a float available nearby, throw that out first to the person in need, then dive in to help when needed.

Do not go and take the bull by the horns unless you are confident and you know what you are doing first of all.

Rising to the occasion takes courage. Your wish to lead can become true, if you find it within you.
