Have you ever thought to do something that you think, it is not possible for you to accomplish? Even if you fail, the attempt to do it as far as you can, puts you in the league of people who had continuously challenged themselves.
On my blog, ‘Join the Hippocampus‘, I highlighted that the brain needs continuous stimulants. Similarly, as much as exercising provides your body with muscular strength, help to boost your immunity and improves your cardiovascular system, it also provides the necessary stimulants to your brain as well.
Keep your exercise routines with dynamic changes. This means that by periodically changing your training sequences, repetitions, load and workout time, you also challenge your mind and body with unpredictable variations.
You might realize, if you have been exercising consistently, that any changes you make in your variation can easily be felt in your body.
Similarly, if you have not exercised for a few days, and suddenly start your fast paced routine again without stretching, you will also be having a sudden trauma to the body, especially your muscles and joints. This is how when some people attempt to do their heavy workouts after a long break, the failure to stretch their muscles and joints causes injury and in return, they postpone their activities for another long period of time for recuperation. Before you know it, you become lazy and begin to procrastinate, giving reasons why you cannot exercise.
Let me lead you to some examples that you can do easily challenge your mind as part of a daily routine.
Hobby
Do something that you wish you had done earlier. Hopefully, not drag racing, but if that is your missing forte, then by all means, do so. As the saying goes, time and tide wait for no person. Photography?
Cooking
If you have never cooked before, this is a good time to learn the basics. It trains your visual skills, sense of smell and taste. You can start from cooking guides shown online, and lead yourself to take the adventure of trying what you have learned. When you become more confident, you can challenge yourself to browse your refrigerator and whip up a dish that you can imagine from one or two vegetables that you are not too familiar. Try tasting these vegetables and decide how you are going to cook them. Your creativity is limitless, and the challenge is using what you have.
Martial Arts
It is never too late, if you like to try any one skill base. Anyone up for Muay Thai or Jujitsu?
Arts and Crafts
How good is your drawing skills? You can learn to sketch, do crochet, pottery, build Lego, and more. Take one that interest you and progress with that.
Professional Courses
You can decide to do a professional course that you believe will be beneficial for your learning.
Sudoku, Puzzle or Video Games
Arithmetical challenges are good to sharpen your mental skills. Just do not get frustrated with any failures whilst trying to solve the puzzles. Similarly, video games can stimulate your motor-mechanics. Just do not get addicted and become a gamer-potato instead. Enjoy your play time and the challenge it give to your mind and body!
This list can go on an on, but I am sure by now you have got the idea.
Most importantly, whatever you plan to do, the challenge to yourself should also be exciting.
